What does our name mean?

Sovereign

The first word in our name is "Sovereign." We believe the Bible clearly teaches that God is sovereign in all things. There is, in all this universe, no such thing as "fortune" or "chance." This is the teaching which says and means that God really is God. For, as the Scripture says, "He does as He pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back His hand or say to Him: 'What have you done?'" (Dan. 4:35). It is not merely that God can do His will, but that He actually does it—without any hindrance from anyone or anything—yet this does not diminish human responsibility. The Sovereignty of God can bring great comfort to His children because a God who is in complete control can be trusted.

Sovereign Grace

The word “Grace” means that salvation is 100% from God. John Newton's most famous song begins, “Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.” A wretch like me? Yes. Scripture teaches that men are not neutral, but that they are enemies of God (Rom. 5:10) and by nature children of wrath (Eph. 2:3). This is characterized in the Bible as spiritual deadness. There is absolutely nothing within any man that deserves God's favor, nor is there anything about fallen man that is disposed to turning to Christ for help apart from God's effectual calling and grace. So, when salvation comes and a man's eyes are opened to his sin and his need for Christ, God's grace has descended, and God alone gets the glory. Sovereign grace is truly amazing grace.

Sovereign Grace Reformed

We are anchored in historical Protestantism by the word "Reformed." Great men, by God's grace, led the church into what is known as the 16th Century Reformation. This was a time when God brought clarity to the gospel as the Reformers declared salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. Christ, the second person in the Trinity, is the center of the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. By following in Reformed footsteps we are joining with a host of church fathers who provide guidance and clarity on the Scriptures.

Sovereign Grace Reformed Church

The word “Church” completes our name. There is no brief explanation for all the treasures bound up in God's church. The word church means “The called out ones” and this too reflects God's Sovereign Grace found only in Jesus Christ. Although there is much we can say here, for the sake of brevity, Sovereign Grace Reformed Church is called to glorify God in our worship, evangelism, and in our fellowship as a covenant community that gathers in the name and blessing of Jesus Christ.
